No Robert Johnson, No Rock and Roll In about 1903 the blues were slowly becoming popular in Texas. Blues music came from African American slaves who were trying to escape from slavery (PBS). The music originally came from the Mississippi River. The south was home to many blues-man who helped make the blues become more popular. Today the blues music differs from the music back in the 1800 s, there are many different types of blues today (ââ¬Å"A Brief History of the Bluesâ⬠). The tunes of Robert Johnson carry a familiarity that spans generations with famous rock bands covering his songs. Throughout his life, he faced many trials and tribulations rising to the occasion every time and leaving his mark on the blues family. Johnson had numerous traits that might have been seen as demonic, he sometimes played with his back turned to other musicians and his audience as if he had something to hide. Sometimes he even got up and walked out in the middle of his gig which people found to be very strange. Many of his songs had to do with the devil such as: ââ¬Å"Hell Hound on My Trail,â⬠ââ¬Å"Me and the Devil Blues,â⬠and ââ¬Å"Crossroad Blues.â⬠ââ¬Å"Crossroad Bluesâ⬠was a song about when he went to meet the devil down at the crossroad to exchange for his soul to be an excellent guitar player. It was the time of the Great Depression and everyone was looking to get paid in any way that they possibly could. Johnson had heard that people had been getting paid to sing the blues and if they could play the guitar well they would get paid extra. Many of his songs reflect back on the Great Depression and the trouble people had back then. They talk about all of the hardship that he and all of the people struggled with.
